Community Organization in the Climate Preparedness and Resilience Category

On April 29, the City of Boston's Environment Department hosted the second annual Boston Climate Awards, honoring the local leaders making extraordinary contributions to the city’s ambitious climate action goals. The Wharf District Council won for the Community Organization award in the Climate Preparedness and Resilience category.

Representing residents, businesses and non-profits in the waterfront, Wharf District Council serves as an organizer, advocate and unifier when it comes to climate resilience. Recognizing the Wharf District's physical vulnerability to sea-level rise, the Council crafted a Conceptual Climate Resiliency Masterplan, featuring a 1.5-mile flood barrier, that’s designed to prevent massive damage of future storms while preserving the historic character and maximizing the future potential of Boston’s downtown waterfront. This public-private partnership is already becoming a blueprint for other neighborhoods, with a similar model now underway in the North End.

We are honored to have been presented this award and citation from Mayor Michelle Wu and the Environment, Energy, and Open Space Cabinet.
